There has been a growing trend among states to ease fire safety rules.

Everyone pictures residential buildings possessing two fire escape stairways on either side of the structure. That concept was adopted roughly in the 20th century because those units were not well-equipped to handle fires. Today, standardized building codes typically default to two staircases as a minimum means of egress for occupational buildings.

Single-stairwell buildings are allowed under certain circumstances. However, some legislatures are looking to open more buildings to single-stairwells in the interest of lessening development costs.

Washington, for example, has recently permitted single-staircases for buildings up to six feet. Colorado allows the same for buildings up to five stories. Proponents of this shift often point to features of modern buildings, such as better sprinklers and fire-proof materials, which make developments safer. The chief concern, of course, is construction of safe and affordable housing. Proponents argue easing the stairway regulations would be a step toward freeing up space.

Fire organizations such as the IAFF and Metro Fire Chiefs are less inclined to this idea. These organizations have been making an effort to prevent single-stairwells from becoming the norm. In case of fire, firefighters would have to use the same stairwell that families use to go down. While fire alarms and sprinklers have improved, they are still imperfect systems. Having multiple methods of egress is important because stairways may become compromised by exceptional levels of smoke.

Developing housing is important, but we should not sacrifice safety in the process.

Fraudsters have existed since time immemorial. One of the more recent time-tested forms of this deceit are romance scams. The scammer tricks the victim into surrendering their affection, and, over prolonged periods of time, uses that endearment to obtain money through false pretenses. These scams have been occurring for centuries, but the advent of the internet, and recently artificial intelligence, have made their stories more compelling. In a recent case, a Michigan man lost $3,000 to someone impersonating Jennifer Aniston.1

Such events are not one-off occurrences, but part of an underground multi-billion dollar industry. Scam centers from countries such as India and Columbia hire employees, sometimes human trafficking victims, to carry out various aspects of the often prolonged scam. The industry obtained an estimated $1.16 billion within nine months in 2025 alone. Oftentimes these companies will lure victims through text or phone calls to build rapport. Once the relationship is established, they create a persona through actors or generative AI and trick victims so that they fall in love.

The scammer will begin to collect money once the connection is established. Up until recently this was done by having the victim send numerous gift cards, but companies have recently enacted increased protection to combat this method. Fraudsters compensate by having the victim learn how to transfer cryptocurrency, or they may resort to plain-old credit card theft.

How to Protect Yourself from Internet Romance Scams

Some important information to protect yourself. Scammers will eye potential victims of all ages, young or old, so long as there is money to steal. Be wary of unknown online presences which personally contact you and ask for your financial aid. Be wary if the individual says they cannot meet in person. Never send money to people you only communicate to through the internet or messaging services. Lastly, be careful of what information about yourself you post online because scammers use these intimate details to find their targets.

The National Highway Safety Administration, in a filing dated Tuesday, October 7, 2025, reported 58 incidents of Tesla autonomous vehicles violating traffic safety laws while in full self-driving mode. Many of the Tesla drivers stated that car gave no warning about unexpected behaviors.

In August, 2025, a Miami jury found Tesla partly responsible for a deadly 2019 crash in Florida while in “auto pilot driver assist” mode (which is different than full self-driving). The jury verdict was in the amount of $240 million.

This new investigation covers 2.8 million vehicles 

Essentially all Teslas equipped with Full Self-Driving technology (“FSD”). This investigation follows other probes into the FSD features on Teslas which has been blamed for several injuries and deaths. Tesla has repeatedly stated that the system cannot drive itself and human drivers must be ready to intervene at all times.

Tesla is also under investigation by the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA) for its “summon technology” that allows drivers to tell their cars to drive to their locations to pick them up – a feature that has reportedly led to parking lot collisions.

There are particular problems in low visibility conditions – including one case in which a pedestrian was killed.

Tesla is under pressure to demonstrate it has corrected these defects. In the meantime, Tesla promises to put hundreds of thousands of self-driving Tesla cars and Tesla robo-taxis on roads by the end of 2026.

A lifelong partnership built on law, love, and community — Neil and Cathy O’Donnell reflect on their journey from law school classmates to leaders in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

This fall, King’s Magazine highlighted two familiar faces in Northeastern Pennsylvania: Neil and Cathy O’Donnell of O’Donnell Law Offices. Featured in the Dreaming and Envisioning a New Future edition, the couple shared their story of partnership—in life, in law, and in service to their community.

How It All Began

Neil and Cathy first crossed paths at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. On the very first day of class, Cathy sat in the wrong seat, and Neil happened to sit beside her. That simple twist of fate sparked a friendship that soon grew into something more. By their second year, they were dating, and today they are celebrating 35 years of marriage alongside decades of building their practice together.

Returning to Northeastern Pennsylvania

Although Cathy grew up in Pittsburgh, Neil’s dream was always to return home to Wilkes-Barre to start his own law practice. That vision guided their journey. From the beginning, Neil’s commitment to his hometown and community was clear. Cathy recalls countless times they’ve had the privilege of representing people Neil once went to school with, underscoring the deep roots that ground their work.

Building a Career in Law

Neil majored in history and secondary education at King’s College before pursuing law. Influenced by professors and family members, he saw law as both a challenge and a calling. Cathy’s career path began in Philadelphia, where she worked in a large law firm before joining Neil in private practice. Over the years, their shared dedication to clients has built O’Donnell Law Offices into a respected name across Northeastern Pennsylvania.

When asked what advice they would give to aspiring lawyers, Neil emphasized the importance of grit: “Get the gift of working together, and it’s truly the greatest blessing.” Cathy encouraged openness and resilience: “Be open to suggestions, be open to saying yes. Stay focused and know your strengths, but also know your weaknesses.”

Giving Back to the Community

Service has always been central to their lives. Cathy has served on numerous boards, including Dress for Success Luzerne County, Junior Leadership Northeast, and the North Branch Land Trust. Neil has served on the board of King’s College, the Holy Cross Fathers, and other community organizations. Both believe in lifting others up, especially students and young professionals.

As Cathy put it, “Not everyone has family support or mentors to guide them when they need help; they need a starting point. I am so lucky that I have the blessing to work and volunteer with them.”

Motorcycle Riders Face Serious Risks on Pennsylvania Roads

This presents a safety risk to pedestrians, and there are some things you should remember before you go out for a stroll.

Pedestrian Rules in Pennsylvania

While out walking, you are considered a pedestrian. However, it is still important to follow the rules of the road when walking down or crossing roadways. If you need to cross a roadway, the safest place to do so is at an intersection with a defined crosswalk. In many cases, these are controlled by crossing signals.

If you are walking along a roadway, Pennsylvania law requires that pedestrians use the sidewalk where one is provided and its use is practicable. When there is no sidewalk available, the law requires pedestrians to walk only upon a shoulder, and as far as practicable from the edge of the highway. Finally, where there is neither a sidewalk nor a shoulder, pedestrians must walk as near as possible to the outside edge of the roadway, and against the flow of traffic where possible.

It is important to remember that, under the laws of Pennsylvania, except where in designated pedestrian areas like sidewalks and crossings, pedestrians must yield the right of way to vehicles. However, you can increase your visibility and your safety by taking a few simple steps.

Responding to an Emergency In Wilkes-Barre, Struck by Negligence

In January 2004, Officer Horst was responding to a call with emergency lights activated when a vehicle driven by another motorist turned unexpectedly and struck his police cruiser on Old River Road. The collision left Officer Horst with severe neck and arm injuries, including the need for surgery to insert a titanium plate in his neck. He has since been under continuous medical care and has not been able to return to work despite multiple attempts.
